How to Optimise Website Content for AI Search in India

Last updated: 2026-05-25

Most Indian business websites are invisible on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews because their content is too thin for AI engines to cite. This guide explains what to change and how to do it without hiring a content agency.

Why AI ignores most Indian websites

When someone asks ChatGPT "best interior designer in Bangalore" or "top CA firm in Coimbatore," the AI does not search the web in real time. It draws from content it has already processed and from sources it considers trustworthy. If your website has thin pages with little detail, the AI has nothing to cite.

This is the core problem for most Indian SMBs. A typical business website in India has:

  • A home page with 100 words of vague text
  • A services page that lists service names with no explanation
  • A contact page
  • No FAQ section
  • No mention of the specific city or locality they serve

That structure might have been sufficient for traditional Google search five years ago. It is not enough for AI search in 2026.

What AI engines actually need from your content

AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews look for content that:

  • Directly answers specific questions
  • Explains a service or topic in enough detail to be useful
  • Identifies who the business is, where it operates, and who it serves
  • Uses structured data (schema markup) so the AI can understand your business type
  • Is backed by mentions on other websites, directories, or news sources

The fixes below address each of these requirements. None of them require expensive tools or a content agency. They require time and willingness to write honestly about your business.

Fix 1: Service pages need depth

If your service page says "We offer accounting services" and nothing else, AI has nothing to work with. A service page that AI can actually cite needs to explain:

  • What the service is
  • Who it is for (type of business, size of business, industry)
  • What the process looks like
  • How long it takes
  • What the outcome is
  • What it costs or how pricing works
  • Where you provide the service (city, state, remote)

A page that covers these points will be between 500 and 800 words. That is not long. A conversation about your service with a potential client lasts longer than that. Write the page the way you would explain your work to someone who is genuinely considering hiring you.

If you have 5 service pages that each have 80 words, rewriting them is the single highest-impact thing you can do for AI visibility.

Fix 2: Add FAQ sections that match real questions

AI engines are essentially question-answering machines. When a user asks a question, the AI looks for content that contains the answer. FAQ sections are ideal for this because they are structured exactly the way AI searches work.

The questions to include are not the questions you wish people would ask. They are the questions people actually ask you. For a home construction company, those questions might be:

  • How long does it take to build a house in Mysore?
  • What is the cost of construction per square foot in 2026?
  • Do I need to be present during the construction?
  • What permits are required for construction in Karnataka?
  • Can you build on a plot that has an old structure?

Each answer should be a complete paragraph, not a one-line response. If you write "it depends," explain what it depends on. If you give a price range, explain what affects the range.

Add FAQ sections to your home page, your main service pages, and your contact page. Add FAQ schema markup to each one so AI engines can parse the question-and-answer structure.

Fix 3: Be specific about your location and service area

Indian AI search queries are almost always location-specific. "CA firm" is not a query anyone types. "CA firm in Hosur" or "chartered accountant near Krishnagiri" is what people ask.

Your website must make your location and service area unambiguous. This means:

  • Your full address on your contact page and in your website footer
  • The city and state mentioned by name on your home page
  • Your service area mentioned explicitly ("we serve clients across Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri districts")
  • LocalBusiness schema markup with your complete address
  • A complete and verified Google Business Profile

Without clear location signals, AI engines cannot confidently recommend your business for location-based queries. You may have excellent services but the AI does not know which city you are in.

Fix 4: Write about your process

One of the strongest content signals for AI visibility is a clear description of how your business works. This is something only you can write with authenticity, and it is what separates your content from generic descriptions that AI would ignore.

A process page or a "how we work" section should cover:

  • Step 1 through the final step, in plain language
  • How long each step takes
  • What the client needs to provide or do
  • What deliverables or outcomes each step produces

This type of content is cited by AI because it is specific, structured, and factual. It also builds trust with potential clients, which is a useful secondary benefit.

Fix 5: Add schema markup

Schema markup is structured data that you add to your website so AI engines and search engines can understand exactly what your business is. Without it, an AI has to infer what you do from your text alone. With it, you are telling the AI directly.

The most important schema types for Indian businesses are:

  • LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService: Your business name, address, phone, email, opening hours
  • Service: Each service you offer, with a description
  • FAQPage: Your FAQ sections, structured as question-answer pairs
  • Person: The founder or primary contact, with their professional background
  • BreadcrumbList: Navigation structure of your site

Schema is added as JSON-LD in your page's <head> section. You can test it at Google's Rich Results Test tool. If you are not comfortable adding it yourself, this is something a developer can do in an hour per page.

See our AI Visibility Audit if you want us to audit and add schema across your entire site.

Fix 6: Get your business mentioned elsewhere online

AI engines do not rely solely on your own website. They look for corroboration. If your business is mentioned on JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, your local business association website, or in a local news article, those signals tell the AI that your business is real and established.

Practical steps:

  • Claim your listing on JustDial and update all details correctly
  • Create or update your Sulekha profile if relevant to your industry
  • List your business on IndiaMART if you offer B2B products or services
  • Check if your industry has a trade association directory
  • Ask satisfied clients to write a Google review mentioning your service and city
  • If you have given a quote to a journalist or appeared in local news, make sure there is a link to your website

NAP consistency matters across all of these. Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical everywhere. If your phone number on JustDial is different from your website, AI engines see inconsistency and reduce confidence in your business data.

What not to do

A few common mistakes to avoid:

  • Do not stuff keywords into your content. Writing "best CA firm Hosur CA firm accounting Hosur" in your page text makes the content unreadable and does not help AI visibility. Write naturally about your service and location.
  • Do not copy content from competitor websites. AI engines detect duplicate content. If your "about us" page looks the same as five other firms in your city, none of you will be cited.
  • Do not publish a page and never update it. A page last updated three years ago signals to AI that it may be outdated. Add a "last updated" date to important pages and refresh the content when your services or pricing change.
  • Do not use vague language. "We provide excellent services with years of experience" tells the AI nothing. "We have been providing GST filing and income tax returns for small businesses in Hosur since 2018" tells the AI everything it needs.

Where to start if you have limited time

If you cannot do everything at once, prioritise in this order:

  1. Rewrite your main service page to 500+ words with the elements listed in Fix 1 above.
  2. Add a FAQ section to your home page with 5 to 8 real questions and full answers.
  3. Make sure your address and service area are clearly stated on your home page and contact page.
  4. Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your complete business information.
  5. Verify your Google Business Profile is complete and accurate.

These five steps can be completed in a weekend. They will not guarantee that ChatGPT mentions your business immediately, but they are the foundation that makes it possible. AI engines need time to process updated content, so changes you make today may affect your AI visibility in 4 to 8 weeks.

If you would like a professional assessment of where your business currently stands across all five AI platforms, our AI Visibility Audit covers this in detail and delivers specific fixes within 48 hours.
