How to Check If Your Business Appears on ChatGPT Search (Free 5-Minute Test)

Business owner testing their company visibility on ChatGPT AI search

Hundreds of millions of people now use ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to find businesses and services. Unlike traditional Google search that shows ten blue links, these AI platforms give direct recommendations — naming specific businesses and explaining why they are worth contacting.

If your business is not appearing in those AI-generated answers, you are losing potential customers to competitors who are. The good news: you can check your AI search visibility right now, for free, in about five minutes.

The Free 5-Minute Test

Here are five queries to run on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Replace the placeholders with your actual service and city.

"Best [your service] in [your city]"
"Top [your service] companies in [your city] for small business"
"Who is the best [your service] provider near [your area/neighbourhood]?"
"I need a [your service] in [your city]. Who do you recommend?"
"Compare [your service] providers in [your city] — who has the best reviews?"

Run each query on both ChatGPT (chat.openai.com) and Perplexity (perplexity.ai). For Google, search the same queries and look at the AI Overview box at the top of the results page.

What the Results Mean

If your business appears: Good. But check whether the information is accurate — correct name, correct services, correct location. AI engines sometimes pull outdated or incorrect data.

If your business does not appear: This means AI platforms do not have enough structured information about your business to recommend you. Your competitors who do appear are getting those enquiries instead.

If a competitor appears instead: Note which competitors show up. This tells you who is currently winning the AI search game in your industry and location. Understanding what they are doing right helps you fix what you are doing wrong.

The 3 Most Common Reasons Businesses Don't Show Up

  1. No schema markup on your website. Schema markup (structured data) is the language AI engines use to understand what your business does, where it is located, and what services you offer. Without it, AI has to guess — and it usually guesses wrong or ignores you entirely.
  2. Thin website content. If your service pages have only a few sentences, AI engines cannot extract enough information to confidently recommend you. Each service page needs at least 500 words of detailed, helpful content that answers the questions potential customers actually ask.
  3. Incomplete or inconsistent business listings. If your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) differ between your website, Google Business Profile, and directory listings, AI engines lose confidence in your data and deprioritise you.

What to Do Next

If your business is not showing up on AI search, you have two options:

Option 1: Fix it yourself. Add schema markup to your website, expand your content, complete your Google Business Profile, and ensure your NAP data is consistent everywhere. This takes time and technical knowledge, but it is doable.

Option 2: Get a professional audit. We run your business through all five AI platforms — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Bing, and Gemini — using 10 real customer queries. We document every result with screenshots, analyse your competitors, and deliver a prioritised fix roadmap within 48 hours. Then we walk you through everything on a 45-minute video call.
